A two-year-old boy died in hospital after being struck by a car in Rathkeale, Co Limerick.
He was struck by a jeep in the Abbeycourt area of the town this afternoon.
He was brought by a family member to University Hospital Limerick for treatment of serious injuries where he was subsequently pronounced dead.
A man in his 30s was arrested at a different location under suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
He was questioned at a garda station in Limerick about the incident and has since been released pending analysis of an evidential sample.
The scene had been sealed off and there is a large garda presence in the area as forensic collision investigators carry out a technical examination.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted at UHL by the State Pathologist tomorrow.
A Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to support the family of the deceased.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact Rathkeale Garda Station.
They will be viewing CCTV footage in the area as part of the investigation.
Gardaí say they are following a definite line of enquiry.
