Stuart Grehan battled back from three down to win his Walker Cup Singles match with a sensational final-hole birdie at the breathtaking Lahinch Golf Club.
Grehan lost the first three holes to the fast-starting American Preston stout before a welcome birdie on the par-four sixth pulled him back within two.
The Tullamore man had levelled the match by the 10th hole but fell back to two-down when Stout made three birdies in four holes from the 12th to the 15th.
Grehan, the 2026 Amateur Open champion, would incredibly take the last three holes – including birdies on the 17th and 18th – to snatch victory and a crucial point for GB&I.
In the morning foursomes, Grehan and Eliot Baker had halved their match with Stout and Ethan Fang giving the home side a 2.5 to 1.5 lead heading into the afternoon singles.
The afternoon Singles were split evenly, four wins a piece, with no matches halved and six of the eight matches reaching at least the 17th hole.
Grehan and Baker face Stout and Fang again first thing in the morning as the anchor match in the Foursomes section, teeing off in the famed Co Clare links at 8.05am.
