Kid Cudi defended his decision to perform with his longtime friend and controversial musician, Ye (formerly known as Kanye West), after some fans and critics expressed disappointment. DJ Peter Rosenberg wrote a post on X, not directed at Kid Cudi, saying musicians were being “openly lame” for supporting the rapper, and Cudi took it as a chance to explain his decision. “I understand ur frustration Peter, I fucks w u, but I dont really care if ur disappointed in me. That man is my brother. U dont have a relationship w him like I do,” he wrote on September 5. “Damn near 2 decades of art and friendship. U not family. So I get it. Ive been around Ye, and I can honestly say talking to him now is how it use to be when I first signed to him, but even better.” Cudi was one of many artists who joined Ye on stage at his Chicago homecoming show on September 4.
Cudi claims that those not close to Ye can’t see the progress he’s made on his mental health; early this year, Ye apologized in an ad taken out of the WSJ in January for his antisemitic behavior. “He was dealing w mental health struggles for years and now hes good. Everyone deserves some grace when they family,” Cudi concluded. “I was the hardest on him out of anybody. I held him accountable. He apologized and it was sincere. But like I said, u not family so I get it.” Ye was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and claimed that he went through a “four-month long manic episode of psychotic, paranoid and impulsive behavior.”
