Lidl has issued an urgent recall for a number of popular cereal bars sold in supermarkets across Ireland after discovering a labelling error that could pose a health risk to some customers.
The discount supermarket chain is warning that wheat, a common allergen and source of gluten, is not listed in English on the affected packaging – meaning those with wheat allergies or gluten intolerance may unknowingly consume it.
Lidl shoppers have also been warned that one of the products being recalled may contain peanuts, which are not listed in English in the ingredients. This could make the cereal bar dangerous for anyone with a peanut allergy or intolerance.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) announced on Thursday, September 3, that a recall notice has now been issued for certain batches of Crownfield Müsli-Riegel bars due to the labelling error.
The food safety watchdog has also issued a “do not eat” alert for affected consumers, saying: The ingredients on the below batches of Crownfield Müsli-Riegel bars are not labelled in English.

“The implicated batch of Crownfield Müsli-Riegel Schoko contains peanut, milk and cereals containing gluten (wheat, oats and barley).
“The implicated batch of Crownfield Müsli-Riegel Schoko-Banane contains milk and cereals containing gluten (wheat, oats and barley).
“There may also be an unintentional presence of rye, nuts (hazelnuts, almonds, walnuts, cashew nuts, Brazil nuts, pecan nuts, pistachios, macadamia nuts), soya, sesame, mustard and lupins.
“This may make the batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of peanut, milk, cereals containing gluten, nuts, soya, sesame, mustard and/or lupins, and therefore, these consumers should not eat the implicated batches.

While safe for the general public, the affected product may cause digestive problems or more severe reactions in individuals with coeliac disease, gluten intolerance or wheat allergies.
For those with peanut allergies or intolerances, even small amounts can trigger serious reactions, ranging from mild discomfort to potentially life-threatening symptoms.
In Ireland, peanut is one of the most common food allergies in childhood and it persists in 80% of cases.
Lidl is urging customers who may be affected to return the product to any Lidl store for a full refund, even without a receipt.
A spokesperson said: “Lidl Ireland is recalling the above Crownfield Müsli-Riegel Schoko & Schoko-Banane with the above batches and best before dates due to the allergens Milk, Oat, Wheat, Barley & Peanuts not being declared in English on some packs.
“No other Crownfield products are affected.
“If you have purchased either of the above products and have an allergy or intolerance to Milk, Oat, Wheat, Barley or Peanuts we advise you not to consume it. Instead, please return the product to a Lidl store for a full refund, with or without a receipt.
“Lidl wishes to apologise for any inconvenience caused. Any customers with queries or concerns can contact our Customer Services Team on the number below.”
