Police confirmed the names of two people who died in separate road crashes on Monday, one a 21-year-old man, the other a woman in her late 70s.

Ryan Cunnigham, 21 and from Kilkeel, Co Down, died at the scene of the collision between two cars on the Ballydugan Road in Downpatrick.

Joyce Crooks (78), died following a head on collision between two cars near Dungannon, Co Tyrone.

Mr Cunningham was the driver of a silver VW Bora that collided with a Toyota Avensis around 2pm on Monday afternoon. A male passenger, also in his 20s remains in hospital after suffering serious injuries.

Two women travelling in the other car involved in the collision also required hospital treatment.

Inspector Cherith Adair, of the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit, said: “An investigation to establish the circumstances of what happened is ongoing.”

Tributes were paid following Mr Cunningham’s passing, with friends describing him as a “true gentleman” and a “great lad…gone so soon”.

Ms Crooks, from the Cookstown area, died in hospital following the head-on collision between two cars on the Cookstown Road.

Five people were taken to hospital following the collision, which happened around 7pm on Monday.

Inspector Adair said: “At around 7pm, we received a report regarding a two-vehicle head-on collision in the Cookstown Road area.

“Our officers attended with other emergency partners and provided medical assistance. Five people were taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries, however, Joyce Crooks sadly passed away later in hospital.”
