“Erupcja,” Pete Ohs’ Toronto-premiering drama in which Charli xcx has her first lead movie role, has been acquired for the U.S.

1-2 Special has picked up North American rights to the feature with plans to release it in theaters in 2026. Alongside Charli, award-winning playwright Jeremy O. Harris, frequent Ohs collaborator Will Madden and breakout actress Lena Góra also star.

Shot guerilla-style in Warsaw, Poland, “Erupcja” follows two women as they compulsively complicate their romantic lives. Nel (Góra) lives in Warsaw where she works at a flower shop. When her childhood friend Bethany (Charli) comes to visit with a new boyfriend, a volcano, as if by fate, erupts, causing the trio to become entangled in a romantic web that forces them to question their place in the universe.”

“Erupcja” was produced by Spartan Media Acquisitions (Ohs), Forever Holiday (Luke Arreguin), bb² (Josh Godfrey and Harris), and Charli. The deal was negotiated by CAA Media Finance on behalf of the filmmakers with 1-2 Special. Magnify represents international sales.

“Finally, another cool distributor exists to champion cool movies. We need more of them,” said Ohs, a mainstay of the festival circuit for several years with films including “Jethica,” “Love and Work” and “The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick.” “I have a lot of hope for 1-2 Special. They are already off to a strong start with films by Harris Dickinson, Christian Petzold, Simón Mesa Soto and two by Radu Jude. It’s a club I’m happy to be a part of.”

Ohs served as writer, producer, director, editor and cinematographer on “Erupcja,” following a creative process that finds inspiration in a specific location and closely involves the cast and crew in bringing the story to life. Charli, Harris, Madden and Góra each contributed to the screenplay of the film, which features a score by Charles Watson of the band Slow Club, and Isabella Summers of Florence + the Machine.

“I am really enjoying my acting journey,” Charli told Variety in August ahead of the premieres of both “Erupcja” in Toronto and Julia Jackman’s Venice-bowing “100 Nights of Hero.” “I feel very, very inspired at the moment in that field, I feel unbelievably creative, and I only ever want to do things that inspire me and make me feel energized.”

As Ohs mentioned, the New York-based 1-2 Special — which launched in February this year as a “theatrical-first, all-rights distributor” — has acquired Dickinson’s Cannes prize-winning directorial debut “Urchin,” Jude’s Locarno premiere “Dracula” and his Silver Bear winner “Kontinental ‘25.” Petzold’s Directors’ Fortnight premiere “Miroirs No. 3,” and Simón Mesa Soto’s Un Certain Regard Jury Prize winner “A Poet.”
