Whether he is commanding the screen as the brilliant but tortured detective in Luther or orchestrating high-stakes negotiations from a compromised plane in Hijack, Idris Elba has firmly cemented his status as one of Hollywood’s go-to stars for pulse-pounding suspense – making his latest project a natural next step. This time, Elba is pulling double duty as both director and star, anchoring a swift 85-minute sci-fi survival thriller, which, by the looks of the first trailer, is set to be his most intense endurance test yet.
Arriving courtesy of Lionsgate, the newly released trailer for Above the Below offers a glimpse into the relentless race against time, as a catastrophic atmospheric reentry forces a spacecraft violently off-course, plunging a trio of astronauts straight from orbit into the crushing depths of the ocean floor. Elba stars as Jackson, the veteran mission commander who survives the crash only to find himself and his crew cut off from the rest of the world inside a heavily compromised capsule. With their power failing and oxygen rapidly dwindling, the footage shows Jackson grappling with the improbability of their survival.
As the clock ticks down, the desperate scenario quickly shifts from an intense survival thriller into a harrowing psychological nightmare, as Jackson and his team are forced to confront an agonizing dilemma: who will risk everything to reach the surface and who may have to sacrifice their lives to be left behind in the dark.
Sharing this pressure cooker environment with Elba’s Jackson are his fellow crew members, Brookes and Rhodes. Caitlin FitzGerald, who previously earned acclaim as Libby Masters in Showtime’s period drama Masters of Sex, brings a wealth of dramatic experience to the deep-sea chaos, starring as Brookes, while Hero Fiennes Tiffin steps into the role of Rhodes, following his turn as the romantic lead Hardin Scott in the After franchise, and more recently leading Guy Ritchie’s action-packed prequel series Young Sherlock.
Elba shares directing duties with Martin Owen, a filmmaker well-versed in genre storytelling who originally conceived the movie’s nail-biting premise. While Elba handles his second feature directorial effort following his 2018 crime drama Yardie, Owen brings his own flair for fast-paced, high-concept storytelling, having previously helmed the quirky horror-comedy The Loneliest Boy in the World and the ultra-stylized action thriller Twist. Backed by a screenplay crafted by Elizabeth Morris, Matt Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent, the team behind Above the Below aims to deliver a lean survival thriller that subverts standard sci-fi tropes.
Above the Below is officially scheduled to open in theaters on Dec. 4, 2026, providing audiences with a dose of winter suspense. It arrives at a busy time for Elba, who will soon be back in action in the fantasy epic Children of Blood and Bone, before expanding his action credentials further in the next installment of Netflix’s Extraction franchise. He is also returning to voice Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which is arriving next year, just over three months after his deep-sea nightmare surfaces on the big screen.
