An injured kitten that was rescued by Rose of Tralee host Kathryn Thomas on Friday has since passed away.

The sad news was confirmed by Ms Thomas over the weekend that the cat, whom she and the veterinary staff in Tralee had affectionately called Rose, had died from her injuries late on Saturday night.

The TV presenter had posted on her Instagram on Friday about how she rescued the cat – which had two broken back legs – from the middle of the road on Friday before bringing it to Abbey Veterinary Centre on Church St in Tralee.

Despite, in Ms Thomas’ own words, the cat “peeing” all over her Rose of Tralee briefs in her car, it had been hoped that the little thing would survive but sadly not.

She was improving at first, full of energy and play, but then her health suddenly declined, shocking the staff at Abbey Veterinary Centre in Tralee.

“I have really bad news – little Rose didn’t make it through the night.

“Everyone is so shocked – devastated obviously,” Kathryn said on Sunday morning.

She explained that the veterinary team is still unsure of the exact cause, though they believe the damage to the kitten’s back legs from being struck on the road may have led to a stroke.

She expressed gratitude to everyone who offered Rose a home and to the staff at Abbey Veterinary Clinic, whom she called “earth angels.”

“Hopefully the little furball is at peace now,” said Kathryn, who will co-host the Rose selection nights with Daithí Ó Sé on Monday and Tuesday.
