A driver has been arrested after overtaking an unmarked garda car at high speed whilst Wexford Roads Policing Unit conducted a speed checkpoint on the New Ross Bypass.

The 19-year-old teenager was detected travelling at 163 kmh in a 100 kmh zone along the Creaken stretch of the N25. When the gardaí carried out a roadside check on the driver, he was found to be on a provisional license and unaccompanied. It was found that the same driver had his vehicle seized twice in June for driving unaccompanied. The 2010 Lexus driven on this occasion was seized by the gardaí under Section 109A of the Road Traffic Act, 1961.

The teenager was arrested on the roadside and conveyed to New Ross Garda Station and was charged with dangerous driving. He has since been released and is due to appear before Wexford District Court.

Commenting on the seizure, gardaí said: “Driving in this manner puts lives at risk. An Garda Síochána will continue to target dangerous driving and take appropriate action to keep our roads safe.”

Meanwhile, the car owner must now make an application to the District Court, should they wish to have the seized vehicle released, where the judge will decide on the matter. The owner must also attend the court for the hearing.
