Rory McIlroy will bid to compound the misery of Team USA and Scottie Scheffler when he takes on the world No.1 in a heavyweight clash of Sunday’s singles at Bethpage Black.
With Luke Donald’s irrepressible European side needing just three points from the dozen on offer to clinch a first road win in 13 years, McIlroy will be in the fourth match out against Scheffler who remained pointless and looking totally lost after two more defeats on a Saturday where the visitors rammed home their supremacy.
Fresh from partnering McIlroy to an epic victory in Saturday’s fourball, Shane Lowry will face Russell Henley in the eighth match of the day as Europe look to run up a score which threatens to leave Keegan Bradley’s hapless hosts going down in infamy as one of the worst teams in Ryder Cup history.
Seeking some semblance of respectability after a weekend when shameful abuse from the Bethpage galleries will be another lingering memory, Bradley is sending rookie Cam Young out first. He will face Justin Rose, who may well be making his final appearance as a Ryder Cup player.
Justin Thomas will face the daunting task of ending Tommy Fleetwood’s perfect run at the 45th Ryder Cup, the Englishman imperious in all four sessions to rack up a 4-0 record. Bryson DeChambeau squares off against Matt Fitzpatrick next up as Donald sends fellow Englishmen out in the first three matches.
There remains doubts about the final match of the day and tournament. Harris English has been drawn to face Viktor Hovland but the Norwegian was continuing to seek clarity on a neck injury which had ruled him out of the afternoon fourballs on Saturday.
