The remnants of Hurricane Humberto could have an adverse impact on weather conditions in Ireland towards the end of this week and into next weekend.

Humberto, which has officially been classed as a Category 5 hurricane and has prompted warnings from the US National Hurricane Center for the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Bermuda and parts of the US east coast, is set to track northwestward over the Atlantic Ocean in the coming days.

Met Éireann had warned that the presence of Humberto, which will become an ex-hurricane as it tracks across the Atlantic, has caused “a good deal of uncertainty” in the forecast.

That forecast suggests there will be unsettled conditions and plenty of heavy rain from Tuesday onwards, with the potential impact of Humberto not likely to be known until the end of next week heading into next weekend.

In a Saturday night update on X, Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather said that Humberto “needs watching” in terms of the capacity of the remnants of the hurricane to impact conditions here in a week’s time.

With or without added adverse conditions from ex-Hurricane Humberto, the outlook for the coming days is pretty bleak amid a likely return to the wet and windy conditions that dominated early September before a welcome relief in recent days.

After relatively pleasant days on Sunday and Monday, Met Éireann has said there will be “frequent rainfall” from Tuesday onwards, which will be “most persistent across the west and north”.

Temperatures will be slightly above normal for this time of year and it will feel quite mild at times, but it will be breezy too, with the unsettled conditions set to persist until at least next weekend.
