Any Ryder Cup victory on away soil is sure to be a massively meaningful one, but the European team’s triumph at Bethpage this time around is sure to be a little more satisfying than most for those involved.

Not only did Europe produce a wonderful performance across the event (even accounting for some late nervy moments on Sunday), they also did so in what were incredibly difficult conditions at the New York venue.

The European players were subjected to some pretty vile abuse by the American fans. While some gentle ribbing is expected at the Ryder Cup, it was felt that a line was crossed on this occasion.

Rory McIlroy seemed to be a particular focus of the vitriol directed at the Europeans, with his wife Erica also being part of that dynamic. She was even struck by a drink thrown from the crowd on Saturday.

Shane Lowry Praises Rory McIlroy’s Wife After Ryder Cup Treatment

At last night’s European team press conference, Rory McIlroy was asked about the abuse directed at his wife during the Ryder Cup. He would sum up how Erica had coped brilliantly with what has occurred over the previous few days.

Erica is fine, she’s a very, very strong woman. She handled everything this week with class and poise and dignity like she always has.

I love her and we’re going to have a good time celebrating tonight.

The Masters champion was not the only one to sing the praises of Erica McIlroy.

Justin Rose would also do so, before Shane Lowry offered these wonderfully kind words to his close friend.

I was out there for two days with Erica McIlroy, and the amount of abuse that she received was astonishing.

The way she was out there supporting her husband and supporting her team was unbelievable. Kudos to her for that.

The scenes at this year’s Ryder Cup are ones that we will not want to see repeated at future editions of the event.

You get the feeling that the home fans at the 2027 edition in Adare Manor will display a lot more respect for players on both sides.
