Gardaí have said a photograph circulating on social media of an elaborately designed check point on a Tralee street is AI generated and that no such checkpoint took place in the area.

The image shows a checkpoint set up on Rock Street in Tralee with one side of the street closed off to traffic.

A large blue and white inflatable arch indicating a ‘Garda/Irish Customs Joint Checkpoint’ is meant to show where cars are to stop at a point that is surrounded by gardaí.

A statement from the Garda Press Office said the image appears to be AI generated.

“It appears as if someone took a picture of the road and then had an AI edit in the gardaí. This would explain why the car in front is so high resolution and the gardaí so low,” the statement said.

“The uniforms also appear inaccurate and the writing on the Garda van is jumbled. The local gardaí have been contacted and no such checkpoint took place.”
