Dairy farmers are expressing concern after recent milk price cuts by Lidl, Aldi, and Tesco.
They say the reductions come at a difficult time, with production costs continuing to rise.
Farmers are warning repeated price cuts could create financial strain and instability in the sector.
Monaghan Dairy Farmer, Martin McElearney said that the supermarkets have taken away any chance milk producers have of making a profit.
Mr. McElearney is the IFA’s National Dairy chair.
He said that since 2020, the registered number of liquid milk producers has fell by 15%.
In response to the price cuts, Mr. McElearney called for consumers to purchase farmers own brands.
He said: “Farmers are the consumer as well. We hit all the other cost of living crises, we experience all them things as well.
“If consumers want fresh milk on their table 365 days a year, they should prioritise having farmer own brands on their table, such as our own Champion here in Cavan-Monaghan.
“Believe it or not, only 40% of the retail price the consumer pays for a drum of milk comes back to the farmer, ” he added.
