After flopping at the box office with just $15.9 million worldwide in total, Renny Harlin’s The Strangers: Chapter 2 has now been unceremoniously dumped onto Digital at home.
You can rent The Strangers: Chapter 2 on Digital at home for $19.99 or digitally purchase the film for $24.99. The physical media release will follow in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.
The good news for Lionsgate is that Chapter 2 had a reported production budget of just $8.5 million. The bad news? The film’s opening weekend suggests that The Strangers: Chapter 3 is destined to be a box office bomb, which begs the question of how Lionsgate should approach the release of the final film in this planned trilogy. Do you give it a pricey marketing push and bring it to theaters as originally planned? Or do you just dump the film to VOD at this point? We’ll keep you posted as we learn more about Lionsgate’s plan for this ill-conceived trilogy.
The trilogy was filmed simultaneously over the course of 52 days in Slovakia, but the additional shoot for the second and third installments brought the shoot to a total of around 80 days.
In The Strangers: Chapter 2, “The Strangers are back – more brutal and relentless than ever. When they learn that one of their victims, Maya (Madelaine Petsch), is still alive, they return to finish what they’ve started. With nowhere to run and no one to trust, Maya must survive another horrific chapter of terror as The Strangers – driven by a senseless, unceasing purpose – pursue her, more than willing to kill anyone who stands in their way.”
Meagan writes in her 1-star review for Bloody Disgusting, “The Strangers: Chapter 2 throttles and chokes out any lingering interest in the Strangers and this confounding trilogy.”
