Irish readers are being introduced to a brand-new homegrown superhero in Strike, a gripping debut novel by Donegal-based primary school teacher Joe Crossan.

The Leitrim native, who now teaches at Scoil Cholmcille in Letterkenny, has channelled his passion for children’s literature and his classroom experience into the novel.

The story follows Tim Staunton, an ordinary teenager whose life changes forever after a lightning strike leaves him with extraordinary powers. As Tim struggles to understand his

new abilities, he’s drawn into a hidden world where nothing is as it seems. With the help of his best friend and his secret-agent uncle, he finds himself at the centre of a global battle against a rogue artificial intelligence determined to control humanity’s future.

“Packed with action, humour, and heart, Strike blends fast-paced superhero adventure with an authentic Irish voice,” according to the publishers.

While the story races across themes of technology and power, it also tackles everyday issues that resonate deeply with young readers — from bullying and resilience to the importance of safe internet use and making the right choices under pressure.

Strike One is not only an exciting page-turner for children aged 9+, but it is also well-suited as a class novel for schools, encouraging discussions around technology, ethics, and identity.

Importantly, this is only the beginning. Strike is the first instalment in a planned trilogy, setting the stage for further adventures with Tim Staunton as he navigates the challenges of adolescence and the responsibilities of being a superhero.

Strike is available now through ABC School Supplies online and can also be purchased in-store at Bookmark, Letterkenny.
