Supermarket giant Aldi has urgently recalled a popular bakery item sold in stores across Ireland amid concerns it could pose a serious health risk to some customers.

The retailer is advising anyone who purchased the affected item to stop eating it immediately and return it to any store for a full refund – no receipt is required.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland announced on Friday that Aldi has recalled a batch of its PYB02 PANATAS Part-Baked custard tarts.

The recall was issued for the popular product as certain batches contain cereals containing gluten (wheat), eggs and milk which are not declared on the label.

“This may make the product unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of cereals containing gluten (wheat), eggs and milk and therefore, these consumers should not eat the implicated product, a spokesperson for the food safety watchdog said in a statement.

Households are being encouraged to check cupboards, fridges and freezers for any affected item that may be been purchased before the recall.

Aldi has apologised for the incident and also urged customers not to eat the affected Part-Baked custard tarts.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “As a precautionary measure, our supplier is recalling PYB02 PANATAS Part-Baked 6 Pack because it contains the allergens egg, milk, and wheat and may contain hazelnut, soya, and sesame, which are not listed on the packaging.
