Motorists are being reminded that there are new fines in place if their number plates are not fully legal.

The reminder has been issued by Donegal Garda Grainne Doherty, who says that Gardaí can now issue Fixed Charge Penalty Notices worth €60 in respect of certain vehicle registration plate offences.

Such offenses include the following, which Garda Doherty says are actionable via the Gardaí’s mobility devices:

  • No Front/back Identification Mark
  • Front/Back Identification Mark Not Distinguishable
  • Front/Back Identification Mark Not Conforming
  • Use of an Unregistered Vehicle

A general guide for what should be on a vehicle registration plate is the following:

  • Black numbers and letters on a white reflective background.
  • The name of the county of registration in Irish at the top of the plate.
  • The flag of the European Community. This must comprise of twelve gold stars in a circle with the letters IRL in white on a blue reflective background. The flag must appear on the left-hand side of the plate.
  • No other numbers, letters or marks should appear on the plate.
