Group Vivendi Africa (GVA), the high-speed fiber optic Internet provider owned by French conglomerate Vivendi which owns the CanalBox brand, has announced plans to launch operations in Ghana, beginning with Accra and Kumasi.

A delegation led by GVA CEO Jean-François Dubois met with Ghana’s Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, to discuss the initiative.

George welcomed GVA’s plans to commercial launch high-speed fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) Internet services in Ghana, describing the proposed tariff as “revolutionary” and in line with the government’s commitment to expanding affordable digital access.

He pledged to engage the Minister for Energy and Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) management to help resolve the impasse over infrastructure access.

“I’m fully committed to initiatives that lower data costs and expand fiber connectivity across Ghana. If this offering delivers what you’ve described, high-speed, unlimited Internet at competitive rates, I’ll personally champion its rollout,” George stressed.

The Minister encouraged GVA to submit a formal proposal outlining its service plan, investment model and the specific bottlenecks requiring ministerial intervention.

He also suggested collaboration between GVA and Canal+ to bundle broadband access with premium content streaming, which could transform Ghana’s pay-TV and Internet landscape.

Dubois outlined GVA’s vision, saying that the company aims to deliver affordable, unlimited broadband connectivity to Ghanaian households.

GVA spreads its African wings

Dubois added that the company was a subsidiary of the Canal+ Group and currently operating in nine African countries. It intends to replicate its mass-market fiber model in Ghana, starting with Accra and Kumasi.

Benin is GVA’s most recent new market, with CanalBox launching in Cotonou on April 30, 2025, and expanding into Abomey-Calavi.

GVA launched services in Kampala, Uganda, in July 2024, adding to its presence across Burkina Faso, the DRC, Rwanda, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo and Gabon. GVA has claimed to have deployed 40,000km of fiber-optic cable, covering more than 2.8 million homes and businesses.

GVA’s parent company, Canal+, completed its acquisition of MultiChoice Group in early October 2025, securing a 94.39% stake in the South African pay-TV and streaming company following the close of its mandatory offer to remaining shareholders.
