ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WSBT) — Local law enforcement and fire departments are participating in National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday.

It’s a day to collect unused medications.

Officials say getting rid of meds you’re not using anymore can help prevent those prescriptions from getting into the wrong hands.

It’s a simple and safe step in helping dispose of unused prescriptions.

In partnership with the 525 foundation, St. Joseph County is doing its part in safely disposing unused medications.

Since 2016, St. Joe County has collected more than 57,000lbs of unused pills.

Items that aren’t accepted include needles and liquids.

Officials say the proper way to dispose used drugs is by bringing them to drop boxes.

If a life can be saved from disposing unused medications that’s what they want to happen.

“It’s better to dispose of it this way because it’s safer. We will take it to a location where it’s all incinerated. No names will ever be on it. And if you throw medications away, there’s a chance that it could get in the wrong hands. Children could get into it, stuff like that, where we just don’t want that to happen, ” said Corporal Bryce Lacosse, St. Joseph County Police Department.

Community members are encouraged to safely dispose of unwanted or expired prescription medications at any of the following drop-off locations:

  • St. Joseph County Jail at 401 West Sample Street
  • Clay Fire Station 21 at 18776 Cleveland Road
  • Clay Fire Station 25 at 12481 Anderson Road
  • Mishawaka Fire Department at 3000 Harrison Road

The drop-off will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
