A 56 year old British holidaymaker has tragically died in the Canary Islands after plummeting nearly 20ft when a hotel railing ‘collapsed’.
Another tourist, aged 54, also fell and sustained serious injuries in the same incident at the Costa Teguise resort in Lanzarote during the early hours of this morning.
The 56 year old man was declared dead at the scene, whilst the other victim was seriously injured and rushed to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, where they remain in a grave condition.
The incident is understood to have occurred around 1.30am, when emergency services received calls that two people had plunged from a ‘considerable height’ within a hotel.
Members of the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), local police and Spanish Civil Guard were dispatched to the scene, reports the Mirror.
According to local reports, the railing that collapsed was situated in a raised section of the hotel complex.
The Civil Guard has since opened an investigation, which will determine whether there was negligence in the maintenance of the railing or in the security of the hotel.
A Foreign Office spokesperson told the Mirror: “We are providing support to the family of a British man who has died and to the family of a British man who has been injured in Spain.”
