An Irishman who was killed in a mining disaster in Australia has been named as Ambrose Patrick McMullen from Cootehill in Cavan.

Mr McMullen, aged 59, and a woman in her 20s both lost their lives in the tragedy.

The explosion happened at 3.45am local time on Tuesday at the Endeavor Mine in Cobar, New South Wales.

Two women, both in their 20s, were brought to the surface following the explosion, but one of the women later died. The second woman was airlifted to hospital suffering hearing damage and shock.

Mr McMullen, who is married with children, had lived and worked in Australia since the 80s.
