Virus may find it easier to infect people, even if they have had the vaccine

Ireland is on alert for a new flu strain that is being blamed for kick-starting an ­early winter surge in cases throughout the UK.

The H3N2 strain of flu mutated during the summer, which could mean the virus is better able to avoid some of the protections people have from previous infections and vaccines.
