A woman has died and her husband is in a serious condition in hospital, after they were stabbed near their home in Cork city last night.
A man in his 20s has been arrested in relation to the incident.
Gardaí and emergency services were called to a house at Shrewsbury Downs in Ballinlough at around 9pm.
They found a 60-year-old woman seriously injured on the street outside. Her husband, who is in his 60s, was also seriously injured.
It is understood that both had been stabbed a number of times.
The woman was taken to Cork University Hospital where doctors worked to save her life, but she was pronounced dead before midnight.
Her husband remains in a serious, but stable, condition.
The man who was arrested is known to the couple.
He is being detained at a garda station in Cork city and can be held for up to 24 hours.
A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed and an incident room has been set up at Anglesea Garda Station.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses, particularly anyone who was in the Shrewsbury Downs area of Ballinlough between 8.30pm and 9.30pm last night and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station on 021 452 2000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
