Unlike many actors, Kate Gilmore never felt the need to have a back-up plan. Here, she talks about going on The Voice of Ireland at 18, working as a tour guide between roles and how Irish theatre has changed in the decade since Waking the Feminists

Actor Kate Gilmore sinks her face into her hands in mock-shame. “Oh, God, Lord above,” she says. “Now, that’s something I would maybe go back and tell myself not to do.” We are talking about her appearance on The Voice of Ireland back in 2012 when she was 18 years old.

“It was fun. It was a fun experience,” she says. “I love singing. I love music. And I had, in my teenage years, done some competitions locally and won some money. And then when this came along, I was 18, and I thought, why not?”
