Gardaí issue warning to businesses after counterfeit note found in Limerick City

LIMERICK gardaí have appealed for vigilance among retailers after a counterfeit note was discovered by a city-centre business, highlighting the financial risk posed to businesses during the Christmas trading period.

Sergeant Michelle O’Halloran, Crime Prevention Officer at Henry Street Garda Station commented:

“On Tuesday week, the 18th of November, a city-centre business reported receiving a counterfeit banknote. With the busy Christmas shopping period underway, large amounts of cash are being handled, and counterfeit currency has the potential to cause real financial harm—particularly to small and medium-sized businesses.”

Sgt O’Halloran added that they’re urging business owners and staff to remain vigilant.

“Be especially cautious if someone attempts to pay for a low-value item with a high-denomination note, which can be an attempt to obtain a large amount of genuine change. If you suspect a note is counterfeit, retain it if possible and contact Gardaí immediately.”
