Avatar: Fire and Ash has had its first few screenings for press on Monday, and the early reaction suggests James Cameron can celebrate yet another billion dollar box office mega hit.
While official critics reviews for Fire and Ash are embargoed till closer to the film’s Dec. 19 release date, 20th Century Studios allowed press to release social media reaction to screenings this week.
The third installment in Cameron’s groundbreaking Avatar series, sees the action return to Pandora after the events of 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water, and introduces the “Ash” people, fire-themed Na’vi clan. Fire and Ash stars Avatar regulars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder and Giovanni Ribisi. The Way of Water‘s Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis reprise their roles.
The major new additions to the cast are Oona Chaplin, who plays Varang, the Na’vi leader of the volcano-dwelling Mangkwan clan and David Thewlis, who plays Peylak, the Na’vi leader of the Wind Traders.
Given the Cameron’s pedigree, and Avatar‘s unique place in pop culture, Fire and Ash‘s box office prospects look good, but the film will still need to perform heroics to keep up with the hauls of the first two chapters. 2009’s Avatar, the film that ushered in the 3D film craze, made over $2.9 billion at the global box office, not adjusted for inflation. The film still holds the title of the highest grossing movie in history. 2022’s The Way of Water scored an incredible $2.34 billion worldwide, a figure all the more remarkable as the theatrical industry was still reeling from a post-COVID slump.
The third film is set to be followed by Avatar 4 in 2029 and Avatar 5 in 2031.

James Cameron’s AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH is a phenomenal moviegoing experience. It’s the biggest of the three — action-packed, visually jaw-dropping and rich with themes of family, legacy and survival. The way it weaves fire, water, air and land into every nook and cranny of the film… pic.twitter.com/aNO5xOXs5x

There’s too much “been there done that” in terms of plot beats and set pieces, but AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH is still an awe-inspiring technical and visceral achievement. It doesn’t skimp on the melodrama or intensity, as James Cameron delivers a towering spectacle of such all-in… pic.twitter.com/dTIxhG8hT6

#Avatar FIRE AND ASH is a knockout. An epic that delivers on an enormous scale, with the characters & worldbuilding paying off surprising dividends. It’s a delight to see a film be this big while still being a narratively & visually bold work of science-fiction. The best one yet. pic.twitter.com/2bu9DGrg9r

With #AvatarFireAndAsh master storyteller and visionary filmmaker James Cameron again delivers a hyperreal experience that is emotional and exhilarating. Repeatedly and exhaustively raising its own bar, this is an audacious feast that delivers more than anyone ordered. #Avatar pic.twitter.com/RrkGINBrpO

#AvatarFireAndAsh: 3 films in, James Cameron still has the sauce, making the epic spectacular feel emotionally impactful. A glorious saga. Bold, brilliant & awesome in every way, this is what movie theaters were built for. Payakan is still my fave, but Varang is the MVP. pic.twitter.com/zs1BjCTYmZ

AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH is a monumental cinematic achievement. Astonishing, boundary-pushing visuals are accompanied by an enthralling narrative filled with poignant commentary and genuinely moving character work. By far, the best Avatar movie. Epic. Ambitious. Heartfelt. A must see pic.twitter.com/pEgPkwKBZj

#Avatar: Fire and Ash is another visually fantastic epic that also contains a couple of the most emotional moments in the series.
On the other hand, I had some issues with the third act and Way of Water remains the peak for me. But damn Cameron delivers spectacle like no one else pic.twitter.com/16uVIXDikG— Eric Goldman (@TheEricGoldman) December 2, 2025
#AvatarFireAndAsh is a damn good James Cameron movie! What else do you need to know?? Go see it in 3-D in the best theater you can find because it’ll blow your mind. That’s what JC does. Every bit as gorgeous as you’d expect, Fire and Ash is also easily the most INTENSE Avatar… pic.twitter.com/uW5M476NKW

I saw #AvatarFireAndAsh! I was surprised at how well the movie plunges you right back into Pandora, and makes it every bit as stunning and thrilling as it has always been. I admire how earnest these movies are. It’s exactly as good as the first two and deserves as many billions.

AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH is overstuffed with a lot of plot, further dragged down by repeating familiar beats from the previous entries. But Cameron still delivers amazing spectacle, with an intriguing darker tone. There’s novel concepts here I wish were more thoroughly explored. pic.twitter.com/O6Q6fn7iT2

#AvatarFireAndAsh is extraordinary. James Cameron delivers another visual feast that has an emotional, action packed story centered around the impact of grief and hatred. Oona Chaplin is this film’s beautifully unhinged standout as Varang. Already want to see it again! https://t.co/ABZBCj7zYr

Never doubt James Cameron. AVATAR: FIRE & ASH is another sprawling, ambitious, gorgeous adventure. Oona Chaplin is the best new element – she’s iconic, she’s gaggy, etc, and her ash tribe rocks. Cameron expands the series’ visual capacity with some innovative, trippy sequences. pic.twitter.com/fxAa7lkSZT

#AvatarFireAndAsh — there’s no denying that the spectacle of these films are unmatched. This one is bigger, louder, sharper. The 3D experience was truly something to behold. However, outside of a SPECTACULAR Oona Chaplin & a fascinating new tribe, the story is frustratingly… pic.twitter.com/4gCezW8piD

AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH is a propulsive, visually stunning blockbuster on par with other installments. Using action-packed spectacle to elevate a solid narrative into a thrilling experience with the best technical craftmanship of all time, it’s worth a watch for fans of the trilogy pic.twitter.com/5tXxyb1lQT

#AvatarFireAndAsh is the most awe-inspiring movie I’ve seen all year. James Cameron continues to be a true visionary in cinema, but it’s Weaver and Champion who are the heart and soul of this beautiful movie. Seeing this in anything but IMAX 3D should be a federal crime. pic.twitter.com/3QZsG1iyAA

AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH is the first James Cameron sequel that feels kinda like a regular follow-up rather than an innovative re-envisioning of its predecessor’s world. It also just casually drops ~3-4 of the best/coolest action sequences of the year and I was rapt the whole time.

Avatar: Fire and Ash has some fun action set pieces but boy if it isn’t mostly a repetitive bore. Virtually identical to The Way of Water and feels pointless. Liked the legacy Oona Chaplin brought but a pretty generic villain. These movies also never need to be three hours long. pic.twitter.com/DOIh25gIDC

Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) – the messiest entry has me tempered, despite a thematic thorniness that’s so intriguing. There’s still plenty to be stunned by, including Cameron tapping back into an amorous energy I haven’t seen from him in ages, all due to an excellent Oona Chaplin pic.twitter.com/IgFh2BUxl4

FIRE AND ASH is the biggest, heaviest, most epic #Avatar film to date. It plays like a Part 2 to The Way of Water’s Part 1, with much of its runtime on grief and the fallout of war. This time, it’s the performances that linger. Sam Worthington and Stephen Lang are even better… pic.twitter.com/ufHK5itHL5

Avatar: Fire and Ash is gorgeous to look at & certainly has its moments, but it falls into the same trap of repetition as the previous films. Lots of set up for little payoff, but at least we get some great action sequences. Varang is a fun new addition. Far too long. #Avatar pic.twitter.com/fFAd6M6Qrd

Three films in and I still can’t get over how magical the #Avatar movies are. Wish I had more original phrasing, but this applies too well — #AvatarFireAndAsh truly feels like a ride. We all thought James Cameron was making his Star Wars, #AvatarFireAndAsh cements it as his Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy (highly complimentary). This is so At World’s End coded & Cameron has fully embraced the anime & video game inspos even more proudly here. A nonstop series… pic.twitter.com/pDOQNgaEKz

AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH plays best having just seen THE WAY OF WATER because it feels like a Part 2 of that story. I was blown away by the visuals, the score, and many performances. But goddammit, you gotta see this thing in Dolby 3D (1.85:1)! It’s unreal how immersive it is. pic.twitter.com/8Rd03dzBFE

#AvatarFireAndAsh is so wildly, unfathomably epic, ambitious, and audacious in every single way, you can’t help but forgive that it has some noticeable flaws.
It grabs you and sweeps you up in this snowball of emotion, action, and spectacle as only James Cameron can deliver. pic.twitter.com/iLLDSskFEG

AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH delivers the most emotional moments of the franchise and is, by far, the most epic in both scope and runtime, yet it also mines the least amount of new material from covering so much ground. Still, the breathtaking visual effects, world-building, and evolving… pic.twitter.com/JhFGiLyA2j
