A garda sergeant now stationed in Waterford, who risked his life to rescue a man from the River Barrow in Carlow, has spoken of what his heroic actions took out of him as he was awarded a National Bravery Award at a ceremony in Leinster House.

Garda Sergeant Fergal O’Connor was awarded a bronze medal and a certificate of bravery on Friday in recognition of his heroism in saving the drowning man six years ago.
