One of the strongest meteor showers of the year is about to peak during a period of heightened activity for the Northern Lights, but is your night sky dark enough for the rare combination? On Saturday, Dec. 13, the Geminid meteor shower will peak — and all you need is your eyes, warm clothes and a dark sky.

Here are 11 public viewing events across the U.S. — some which need booking ahead — where you can take a lawn chair and a blanket, dress for colder temperatures, and give yourself to see bright meteors from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon — and perhaps even glimpse a faint aurora glowing on the horizon in the north.
