Garry Harland, a farrier at a livery in Galphay, North Yorkshire, is seen “hot-shoeing” Albert, a pure-bred Irish draught horse. There are about 2,000 qualified farriers in the UK, and only a handful are able to make their own shoes from scratch in a forge like Harland does. The rest use factory-made shoes. Hot-shoeing is where the horseshoe is burnt into the foot for longevity and stability instead of being pinned in with small nails
