Jennifer Morey was just 25 when she was savagely assaulted – having her neck stabbed and throat slashed by the very man she had employed to protect her.

Jennifer was a young solicitor when she made the choice that would permanently change her life. She was living alone in a flat complex in Houston in April 1995, which she considered to be secure after searching for somewhere that felt “as safe and secure as possible”.

This particular flat boasted numerous security measures, from an eight-foot-high fence surrounding the perimeter of the development to its round-the-clock security guard.

Bryan Wayne Gibson was the security guard that day who forced entry into Morey’s flat and attempted to both sexually assault and murder her.

After settling herself into bed, the young woman awoke to a nightmarish situation as she opened her eyes to discover someone on top of her. She recounted the dreadful events in an episode of I Survived…, explaining she felt their body weight “pressing” her down.

Morey described how the intruder was grasping at her underwear, trying to remove them. She said: “I reach my hands up, and I feel this knife that’s being held against my throat.

And it was the clearest thought that went through my brain and woke me up: ‘Oh, I’m being raped.'” With every ounce of her strength, the 25 year old screamed, kicked and battled against her assailant, but in revenge he knifed her on the right side of her face, reports the Mirror.

She received a “hard blow” to her right eye and witnessed a sudden “explosion of blood, like a hot waterfall” – but that wasn’t even the worst of it.

“I didn’t think of what the next step could be, not until my throat was slit,” Morey shared.

It was then, she recalled, that she thought she was going to die but was willing to do whatever she could to fight for her own life. She managed to escape to the bathroom, where she used all of her force to keep the door closed as she rolled toilet paper up against her neck to help with the bleeding.

Although the blood was gushing profusely, and she no longer wanted to sit and wait for what was on the other side of the door. Instead, in a desperate attempt to avoid bleeding to death, she forced open the door, which was wedged shut, and tried to phone for help.

Bryan Wane Gibson had severed all of the power to her flat, including the lights and the landline to call for help, but Morey had a mobile phone, which was rare in 1995, and might have just saved her life. She dialled 911.

The man who responded to her plea for help, Richard Everett, provided her with crucial advice that Morey credits with saving her life. As she was barricaded in the bathroom and on the phone with emergency services, she heard a knock at her apartment door.

Believing that assistance had arrived, Morey moved to open the door, but Everett sternly advised her not to do so under any circumstances. His counsel proved lifesaving as it was Gibson who was waiting on the other side of the door.

Following this terrifying ordeal, police apprehended the 26 year old security guard at the apartment complex later that night. It appears that Gibson had a history of causing trouble while on duty, having been repeatedly reassigned roles over three years at Pinkerton Security due to numerous complaints.

Rather than dismissing him for these persistent grievances, they relocated him to Morey’s apartment complex, where he was scheduled to work night shifts.

This wasn’t the first time the company had ignored such misconduct. Reports indicate that between 1991 and 1995, 130 Pinkerton guards were convicted of felonies in Texas alone.

In 1998, Morey brought a lawsuit against Pinkerton Security and received a substantial settlement, although the exact amount remains undisclosed. That same year, she managed to establish her own practice and went on to become a highly respected family lawyer in the Fort Worth area.

Morey maintains contact with the 911 call dispatcher, who she believes saved her life. She expressed: “Having instinct, intuition and a big heart, [Richard] saved my life,” she said.

“And for that, he will always be one of the most important people that’s ever impacted my life. And I was lucky enough that when I got married, he came to my wedding. “.

Gibson was freed in 2015 and is now a registered sex offender. It’s thought he resides in Texas in the US.
