A Motorola smartphone is said to have caught fire while sitting in a man’s pocket, according to a video now circulating on social media.

The clip was shared on December 30 by X user Abhishek Yadav, who reposted it from Instagram account shubhxr_369. It shows a blue Motorola G-series phone, believed to be a Moto G54, with heavy damage to the rear panel. The plastic appears melted, and the screen is cracked and blackened.

The phone’s owner also shows a large burn hole in his jeans. He claims the device was not in use at the time. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported.

The incident has once again raised concerns around lithium-ion battery safety. While modern smartphone batteries use soft pouch cells that are designed to reduce the risk of violent explosions, they are also more vulnerable to physical damage. In such cases, high-temperature flames can still cause serious injuries.

That said, the exact cause of this incident would require a proper investigation by the manufacturer. Motorola has not commented on the case at the time of writing.

Similar incidents involving Motorola phones have been reported in the past. In February 2025, a woman in Brazil suffered serious burns after her Moto E32 caught fire in her back pocket while shopping. Motorola later said such cases are rare and often linked to defects or damage.

There have also been scattered online reports in recent years, including a 2024 Reddit post describing a Moto G Power 5G overheating and igniting in a pocket.

Incidents like this remain uncommon, but videos shared online tend to draw attention quickly, especially when they involve devices failing without active use.
