Irish star Jessie Buckley was named Best Actress for her starring turn in Hamnet.

Accepting her award at the Beverly Hilton, Buckley saluted Hamnet director Chloé Zhao, co-star Paul Mescal, author O’Farrell, and all the cast and crew of the film, which tells the story of William and Agnes Shakespeare’s lost son.

“This is not a normal feeling or situation to be in,” she said.

The Killarney-born star saluted “the incredible women I am honoured to stand beside in this category” as she clutched her award.

“I mean, Julia Roberts, you are, like, a hero to us all, thank you,” she continued. “Jennifer (Lawrence), Renate (Reinsve), Eva (Victor), Tessa (Thompson) – God, I’d watch you anytime, anywhere. You blow my mind.”

The film, based on Maggie O’Farrell’s book about the death of Shakespeare’s son, which inspired him to write Hamlet, was also named best motion picture drama, while One Battle After Another was named best motion picture comedy/musical.
