Award-winning artist Lucy Pittaway is to close two of her galleries – including one in North Yorkshire.

The Harrogate gallery will shut soon, along with one at Bowness in Windermere. It follows rising costs, Lucy said, with a big rent increase in Harrogate a decisive factor.

In a social media post, she described the closures as “an incredibly tough decision”.

“Our priority right now is supporting the wonderful colleagues affected as we work through the consultation process,” she added.

“I am so grateful for their hard work and dedication, and for the support our customers have shown these galleries over the years. It truly means the world.”

Her York gallery, which opened in the former Oasis fashion store on Coppergate in 2023, is staying open.

So too are the galleries in Richmond, Yarm, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Keswick, as well as the Brompton-on-Swale Outlet. The website continues to trade normally.

Lucy, who lives near Richmond, added: “In the coming weeks, both closing galleries will hold closing down sales, with 30% off all stock.

“Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your continued support.”
