The leaderboard is getting competitive already

You have to guess where and when this snap was taken(Image: Cork Guesser / Brian Lynch)

Everyone knows Leesiders love to talk about Cork – now there’s a game to put your knowledge to the test and see how well you recognise different spots around the Rebel county.

The premise of Cork Guesser is simple – the game shows you five different pictures that could have been taken anywhere in the county between 1941 – 2025 and you have to pinpoint where and when the snap is from.

Ben Dunlea from Rochestown is the man behind the new game that has already been played more than 3,000 times since he posted it to his LinkedIn just a couple of days ago.

The 29-year-old works as a freelance web developer after graduating from UCC with a degree in computer science so he had all the skills needed to make a Cork version of another game with a similar premise that shows pictures from all over the world.

The reaction to the game has been huge with Cork’s far-reaching diaspora playing from all over the world – from areas you would expect like Canada and Australia to spots you wouldn’t think of like Reunion Island off the southeast coast of Africa, Brazil, Thailand and Vietnam.

Ben said the biggest challenge was finding pictures and coordinates of enough places to make the game viable. Luckily, the team at GeoGraph.ie have a massive publicly available database that he was able to work from.

The Rochestown man said one of his favourite things about the process was seeing the many ways in which Cork has changed over the years.

He told CorkBeo: “You don’t even realise how different some of the streets are. There are pictures of trains running in places where they’ve all stopped now. You really get a sense of how the city had a different pulse.”
