While Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton are appealing their hefty fines, another LIV Golf star is willing to make a sacrifice…

David Puig is bucking the trend on LIV Golf.

With Ryder Cup heroes Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton among those locked in a legal battle over sanctions imposed on them by the DP World Tour, one of the league’s brightest young talents has just joined the Wentworth-based circuit as a full-time member.

Before his year, LIV have settled the fines handed down to DP World Tour members playing on the rival league without a tournament release. In his two seasons since joining LIV, Rahm has revealed he’s racked up $3 million in penalties.

But the taps have now been turned off by LIV’s benefactors – the Saudi Public Investment Fund. So until the appeal for Rahm and Hatton is heard, players will now need to fork out from their own pockets to play on two separate tours.

That’s a sacrifice Puig is willing to make to play on the tour which he grew up watching.

“I want to be part of the tour so I’ll do everything I can and to you know to keep being part of it,” Puig tells TG at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. “If that means paying whatever amount I’ll do it and obviously they’ve got to find a solution.

“I feel like which at some point I think they would and hopefully we all have the same rules and whatever they decide at the end it’s what I’m going to do.

“It’s expensive, but I’m willing to do that and that’s why I joined the tour. We’ll see what happens. In my case you know I’m willing to do as much as I can to be part of this tour.”

Puig won his maiden DP World Tour title at the BMW Australian PGA Championship in November, but currently has no access to major championships as LIV continue to chase world ranking points.

That’s why he admits he’s feeling extra pressure to perform here in Dubai – his debut in a Rolex Series event – where he is contention heading into Sunday’s final round.

“Playing here is great,” he says. “I grew up watching this tour, spent pretty much my entire life in Spain and watching what was the European Tour. Obviously we get the ranking points and we play against unbelievable players as well.”
