‘It’s the first of the ascension,” goes the chorus of Fitzcarraldo, The Frames’s towering 1995 song. “It’s a sad way we’ve flown after the storm/And her last words were: ‘I was only thinking of you.’”

Once you hear Fitzcarraldo, sung by Glen Hansard, it’s hard to think of anything else. Released in 1995, it remains one of the standout Irish songs of that year.
