Katie Taylor says she feels privileged to be a stepmother to five “great kids” who have “great sense of humour”.
The boxing legend married husband Sean McCavanagh last year in a private wedding.
Sean, from America, is the father to two sons and three daughters, who range in age from 11 to 23, after his wife passed away in October 2023.
And Katie says it is “absolutely” a blessing to have taken on the role of stepmum.
“He’s the father of five amazing kids and it’s definitely been a blessing for sure,” the Bray native said.
“They are five great kids, also with great senses of humour.”
Adding that she is “definitely not laying down the law” at home, Katie explained how becoming a wife and stepmum hasn’t changed her as a person, but has presented some learning curves.
“There has definitely been lots of adjustments and lots of challenges along the way, but I’m not sure it’s changed me a lot,” Katie told Brendan O’Connor on RTÉ Radio 1.
“I’m definitely enjoying it and learning from it.
“It’s a great privilege to be a stepmother and I’m very privileged to be a wife to an amazing man.
“I want to honour my husband, and I want to be the best stepmother I can be as well.”
Katie recalled the moment she knew Sean was the one for her.
“He took me to a Bruno Mars concert in Connecticut,” she explained.
“It wasn’t our first date, but one of the first dates and [Bruno’s song, Marry You] resonates with me because I knew on that date I was going to marry this guy.
“I knew very quickly, and here we are a couple of years later happily married.
“I knew straight away he was a great guy with a great heart and a man of integrity. And he also loves the Lord as well.”
Katie is thankful she met Sean at a later point in her boxing career because her love life wasn’t a priority for her when she was competing at the Olympics.
“Meeting him happened later on in my career, which was perfect,” she said.
“I don’t think I would’ve entertained being in a relationship early on in my career, because I was so focused and driven on my Olympic dream.
“This is an amazing season of my life where I can sit back and enjoy married life.”
