This Morning star Ben Shephard has shared a rare insight into his marriage. He’s well-known for his TV career but tends to stay private when it comes to his personal life.

Ben is married to wife Annie, but the pair keep their romance low-key – as they tend to avoid red carpet events and Ben rarely discusses his romance in public. Ben was studying at Birmingham University when he first crossed paths with wife Annie.

They were both 21 at the time and they met at his best friend’s birthday party. Ben’s dream was to be an actor before becoming a runner at a TV company where he was spotted by a producer as a potential host. He said that Annie was there for him before he became successful in TV.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: “Annie was with me way before I got into telly. She has been through everything with me, the highs and lows.” Revealing the secret behind their long-term marriage, Ben said: “She’s exceptionally patient. And I’m very patient with new shoes. What I really think is that we were great mates when we got together.”

Ben said that wife Annie tends to spend more time on her own which she enjoys: “Annie is much more solitary than me. She’s much happier in her own company. Half the time she’s like, ‘I need a bit of space. Can you leave me alone for five seconds, please’?”

Ben recently became emotional while he was hosting This Morning as he talked about his wife and two sons. Annie and Ben, who have been married since 2004, are parents to Sam, 21, as well as 19-year-old Jack. In his usual slot as host of ITV’s flagship magazine show last week alongside co-host Cat Deeley, he was on the verge of tears as he opened up about Jack’s birthday.

He said: “It was Jack’s 19th birthday on Saturday. I know I don’t look old enough!” When Cat asked how his wife was, Ben explained: “Well, I was thrilled to bits because he was down in Bristol with his brother so he wasn’t anywhere near us.

“They had a big party, but it’s that moment where…a friend of ours messaged us saying that 19 years ago, Annie held Jack in her arms for the first time.

“It was quite a moment, like…’Wow, he’s got so big so fast!'” The Tipping Point host then quipped: “But they weren’t home, so it was brilliant, and the house was tidy! We had a very nice weekend.” The presenting pair also discussed Ben’s children flying the nest. Ben said that he and wife Annie were struggling with the concept of their boys leaving home.

He explained that he and Annie they make sure to make plans with their son Sam while he is at university so they don’t get too bored.
