Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch has given the thumbs up to a play about his dramatic life – performed and created by the son of late broadcaster Gerry Ryan.

Mr Hutch has taken part in a promotional social media post for the play – simply called The Monk – which is a one man show by actor and writer Rex Ryan, whom he calls a “little cheeky f***er”.

Mr Hutch, who almost won a seat in last year’s general election in the Dublin Central constituency and has been in the Garda’s sights for decades, has known Mr Ryan since the writer was a child.

The show, which examined Mr Hutch’s life of crime, begins a six day run at Dublin’s Ambassador Theatre on February 16. Mr Ryan is also director of the one-man show.

That follows a sell out week long stint at the Glass Mask Theatre also in Dublin last year for the play – a fictionalised account of the life of Mr Hutch, 62.

In a video released on TikTok, Mr Ryan and Mr Hutch – charged with the murder of Kinahan ally David Byrne during the attack on the Regency Airport Hotel in north Dublin on February 5 2016 but later acquitted by the Special Criminal Court in 2023 – are seen together.

Mr Hutch is then asked why he allowed Mr Ryan, who is from Clontarf in north Dublin where The Monk has lived for decades, to stage a play about his life.

He replies: “Because he asked me and I know him going back over the years, since he was a kid – a little cheeky f***er.

“I got on with him, he is a nice kid.

“Not as good looking as me, but he is nearly there.”

The Monk is on at the Ambassador Theatre from February 16 – 21.
