Gardaí are investigating criminal damage to a number of vehicles in a Cork town after a group of youths was caught slashing tyres.

The group were seen on CCTV at approximately 3am in Carrigtwohill on Sunday, and it’s believed tyres were slashed on at least seven vehicles in the area. The footage shows three teens walking down the town’s Main Street, where they can be heard laughing and casually chatting.

They then approach a jeep outside one home, and one of the three boys can be seen pulling out a sharp implement. He stoops and slashes the first tyre before all three walk out of frame as they head towards the back of the vehicle. There are some thudding sounds – almost like puncture attempts – before the back right tyre bursts and we hear a loud gush of air flowing out. More laughter is heard before the youths flee the scene.

The boys mainly targeted vehicles on Church Lane and on the town’s Main Street, and locals raised the alarm about the incident on social media the following day.

Gardaí confirmed to Cork Beo they were “investigating a number of reports of criminal damage of vehicles in the Carrigtwohill area in the early hours of Sunday 1st February 2026. Enquiries are ongoing.” This incident comes as locals are still being warned that car thieves are active in many parts of Cork city and county.

Last month, a Cork mum issued a warning to others to remain vigilant after waking up to unsettling footage that showed a man searching her car and trying to open her front door in the dead of night. Aoife, a mother of two living in Blackrock, alerted Gardaí early this morning and shared the footage online.

The young man was seen approaching Aoife’s car late last night and rifling through it, looking for valuables. After coming up empty-handed, rather than moving on to the next car, he walked up the steps to her front door and tried to open it.

This follows a recent Garda warning about the new technology thieves are using to break into cars and what you can do to protect yourself from it. These thieves generally rely on owners forgetting to lock up before heading to bed. However, with modern technology, thieves can now access your car even if your keys are securely tucked away inside the home if they’ve brought the right tools.

Thieves across the UK began adopting the tech in recent years, with the devices responsible for an estimated 40% of all car thefts, according to a report from the BBC. The tech is less common here in Ireland, but Gardaí have recently issued a warning to motorists outlining how they can protect themselves
