A wolf that was recently detected near the Truckee area has now crossed into Nevada, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

NDOW says the California Department of Fish and Wildlife notified them Monday morning that a GPS-collared wolf was detected in Nevada in the high-elevation Sierra Nevada. The animal was located north of Lake Tahoe, between Mount Rose and Mount Houghton, and remains well away from developed areas or communities. Wildlife officials say the wolf is currently moving through the northern portion of the Carson Range.

NDOW officials emphasized that wolves detected in Nevada are typically dispersing individuals from neighboring states. Historically, these animals travel through remote areas of Nevada for a short period of time before moving out of the state.

The wolf is collared and managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, which is leading monitoring efforts. NDOW says it is coordinating closely with CDFW and receiving general location updates as the animal continues to move through the region.

Wildlife officials continue to remind the public to remain alert, supervise pets closely, especially during early morning and evening hours, and avoid approaching or harassing wildlife. Anyone who observes a wolf or captures photos or video is encouraged to report the sighting to wildlife officials so the activity can be documented and monitored.

CDFW and NDOW say public reporting and interagency coordination help support both public safety and wildlife management as wolves continue to reestablish their presence across the region.
