The English actor – whose grandfather was Northern Irish – parted ways with pop star Perry in June after nine years together.

The 48-year-old revealed he wanted to embrace his Irish heritage and make getting around Europe easier post-Brexit.

“I’m getting my Irish passport. [My grandfather] was actually from Northern Ireland,” he told former RTÉ host Ryan Tubridy on Virgin Radio in the UK.

Tubridy replied: “And there’s a lot of people from the UK who, after a certain political move, found themselves looking for a granny down the back of the couch.”

The Pirates of the Caribbean star laughed and said: “Part of it was actually just for work, like, when I was working in Prague for a while, [there was] a whole bunch of new paperwork.”

Bloom, who was born in Canterbury in Kent, added: “And also, I love the fact that I’ve got Irish heritage. That’s all it is.”

The Lord of the Rings star plays a retired Irish boxer in new psychological thriller The Cut, which is released this week.

This isn’t the first time Bloom has embraced his Irish roots after he previously surprised pub goers by singing a folk song on St Patrick’s Day.

Bloom belted out Irish folk classic She Moved Through the Fair on the stage at The Alma pub in Windsor in 2023.

The movie star announced his split from Perry (40) earlier this summer. The former couple have a four-year-old daughter, Daisy.

They issued a statement saying they have been “shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting.

“They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is – and always will be – raising their daughter with love, stability, and mutual respect.”

The news came after Bloom sparked split rumours by attending billionaire Jeff Bezos’s luxury Italian wedding alone.

Tension in the stars’ relationship is believed to have been brewing since September last year when Perry released her latest album, 143. It was the lowest-scoring album on a review site in over a decade.

Perry also faced backlash after blasting into space on one of Bezos’s Blue Origin planes in April, with some describing the trip as “tone-deaf,” given the current cost-of-living and environmental crises.

The singer subsequently confessed that she was feeling “battered and bruised” by the online reaction – with Bloom apparently not pleased about the trip either.
