The Minister for Communications says he will do his best to secure multi-annual funding for local independent radio stations.

Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, yesterday announced an allocation of €10 million to support public interest journalism.

As part of this allocation, Coimisiún na Meán is to include a ring-fenced measure worth €3 million for commercial radio under the News Reporting Scheme.

This funding aims to enable commercial radio services such as Radio Kerry, to provide additional, high-quality news reporting on matters of public interest.

Speaking to Jerry O’Sullivan on Radio Kerry this morning, Minister O’Donovan stopped short of confirming this funding for local radio will be made available in upcoming budgets.
