He says others are doing the same thing, and if I sack him he’ll take me to court

Q I recently discovered that a senior worker was clocking in but later in the day sneaking off to do a nixer job down the road, and not clocking out. When I confronted him, he said others were doing the same, and if he’s sacked, he’ll take my company to court. I really could do without any negative publicity, so would a strong warning suffice, or do I need to make an example of him?
A It’s hardly reassuring to discover that a senior person – someone expected to set the tone for the team – logs in and then leaves early to do a bit of moonlighting. It demonstrates a complete lack of respect for the company, colleagues, and his position.
