Whoopi Goldberg recently made headlines for her comment about not being “to afford” to retire right now. Now, her comment about her finances is curious in light of The View‘s silence about Jimmy Kimmel‘s “indefinite suspension.”
“Who can afford to do that?’ Goldberg told Entertainment Tonight on Sept. 9 when asked if she was interested in “slowing down. “If you don’t marry well, you gotta keep working.” When the reporter pointed out that she “could probably afford” retirement, Goldberg admitted, “No, not by now. Not yet. I gotta keep paying those bills, baby.”

If the 69-year-old comedian feels like she doesn’t have enough money to retire comfortably, it might be why she and the rest of The View panel have been uncomfortably mum about Kimmel’s controversy. The women on the daytime talk show are known for their opinions, so why would they keep quiet now?

According to the Daily Mail, hosts Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, and Alyssa Farah Griffin were not on the same page on how to handle the issue. With cast members like Goldberg worried about their finances, they might not want to be the squeaky wheel during such a tumultuous time at the network.
“ABC as a whole is being attacked – not just The View,” a source explained. “The FCC is coming for all of them. There’s panic across the board, but obviously with more politically based shows than the entertainment ones.” The network’s move under the pressure of the FCC has created tension backstage.
“Behind the scenes, staff are scared for their jobs. It’s a scary time. They’re really concerned. People are holding their breath,” the insider added. “Those who work in the media industry have been in fear for a while now, but last night’s news, you can say it has heightened their fear. Some shows used to be without censorship, but now, after Kimmel’s suspension, they’re going to have to be extra careful about what they say on national TV.”
Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr said in a Sept. 18 appearance on The Scott Jennings Radio Show that The View might be his next target.
“I think it’s worthwhile to have the FCC look into whether The View, and some of these other programs that you have, still qualify as bona fide news programs and therefore are exempt from the equal opportunity regime that Congress has put in place,” Carr said.
So, Goldberg might be keeping her mouth shut publicly even though she is likely supporting Kimmel privately. Everybody wants to keep their job.
