A pedestrian in his 40s has died after being struck by a car on the M8 motorway in Co Cork last night.

The fatal collision took place on the northbound stretch of the motorway at Carrigane, Mitchelstown at around 9:15pm between junction 11 and junction 12.

The body of the pedestrian was taken to the mortuary in Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place.

The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was uninjured.

Gardaí have closed off the section of the road where the collision occurred as the Garda Forensic Collision Investigators conduct a technical examination of the scene.

A statement from Gardaí read: “Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Gardaí are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area at the time of the collision to make this footage available to Gardaí.
