ROYAL PLAYWRIGHT probably hasn’t quite delivered on all he promised since making a winning debut at Salisbury last summer, but he has plenty of useful efforts to his name, and this looks an excellent opportunity. He stands out at the weights on these terms and he remains unexposed at this trip. Mister Rizz is the obvious danger.
BAY OF BRILLIANCE shaped like a stayer when fifth in a class 2 novice event over seven furlongs at Newbury on debut last month, outpaced over a furlong out and plugging on in the closing stages. Being a half-brother to Absurde, he’s expected to be well suited by this step up in trip, and he looks the one to beat on form. Well-bred pair Study of Words and Sayedaati Saadati both failed to meet expectations first-time out but are worth another chance in an open-looking maiden.
This looks wide open on paper, but Golden Mile victor RHOSCOLYN is always to be feared round here, especially when the ground is on the easy side and, with Oisin Murphy back in the saddle, he is taken to make it three career wins in this particular contest. Alpha Crucis also has winning form over course and distance and heads the list of dangers, while Arkhalia Flynn, Ata Rangi and Cerulean Bay all need factoring in too. Whitcombe Rockstar completes the shortlist.
SADDADD continues to go from strength to strength this season, building on his London Gold Cup success at Newbury when following up in another competitive handicap at Sandown last time. That performance suggests he’s ready for this step up into listed company and, with no concerns regards soft ground, he’s expected to take another step up the ladder now. Ancient Wisdom, who has been gelded since the Coronation Cup, is a classy sort for this grade and is feared most ahead of Bolster and High Stock.
There’s substance to the form of the Newbury novice TIMEFORSHOWCASING won on her second start in July and while she followed that with a low-key effort at York, her recent fifth of eight in the May Hill at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting represented a step firmly back in the right direction. A reproduction that would make her hard to beat, particularly with the drop to seven furlongs on this sharp track likely to play to her strengths. Wetsand is second choice ahead of Alarming and Mystic Moment.
FINALISE spreadeagled the field in a novice at Kempton last month and is hard to side against with more improvement on the cards now she ventures into handicap company for the first time. Irish challenger Steps In the Sand is enjoying an excellent season and should ensure William Haggas’ upwardly-mobile filly doesn’t have things all her own way though, while Dancingwithmyself isn’t taken lightly after her unlucky Epsom fourth. Spirit Of Jura can also have a say in this cracking handicap.
MONSIEUR PATAT was caught in a metaphorical cul-de-sac throughout the closing stages of the six-furlong handicap at Windsor he contested 16 days ago and, granted better luck this time, the eight-year-old is weighted to emerge on top. A first career success is surely not far away for Rory Rocket and he is feared most ahead of Thunderous Love and Tiger Tulip, while Silver Wraith also needs a mention in this competitive race.
