Red alert weather warnings have been issued for popular Irish holiday hotspots in Spain.

The red warnings were issued for the Balearic Islands of Ibiza and Formentera on Tuesday. The alert is for torrential rain and will remain active until 4pm.

There are reports in the local media that the Balearic Ministry of Education has urged families not to go to schools to collect their children as it is too risky.

At least one school has been evacuated because of the torrential rain with more affected by flooding and leaks.

“The storm has become stationary, and rainfall could reach up to 180 litres in just a few hours,” said Aemet (the state meteorological agency for Spain).

It has not been confirmed if the warning status will be updated after 4pm.

There is also a yellow alert in force for people in the region south of Mallorca and an orange alert in force for the Northern Coast of Alicante.

Spain is the most popular travel destination among holidaymakers from Ireland with some 2.5m visits recorded every year.
