Shane Lowry will come away from this year’s Ryder Cup with some amazing memories, but he was also sure to be taken aback by some of the happenings at Bethpage over the weekend.
It was expected that the European players would be met with a hostile reception at the New York venue. In saying that, few could have predicted just how far some of the spectators would go.
Rory McIlroy was the main focus of their abuse, although it was also dished out to other members of the Europe team. Having partnered with McIlroy on both Friday and Saturday, Lowry was also subjected to quite a bit of vile abuse himself.

As he did for most of the weekend, Shane Lowry would provide the perfect response to those comments.
These sorts of incidents were a consistent theme over the course of the Ryder Cup.

This is only a small glimpse into what the European players were subjected to at this year’s Ryder Cup. Considering the etiquette that is expected at golf tournaments, this is a step way beyond what is usually acceptable.
You certainly would not expect to see similar scenes at the 2027 edition in Adare Manor, with European crowds far more respectful of visiting players. While some gentle ribbing is part and parcel of the Ryder Cup, clips such as the one above show that the American galleries went too far on this occasion.
Thankfully, the Europeans responded by claiming a first away victory in this event since 2012.
